Definition of Apparitions

An apparition, from Latin apparere (to appear), is in its literal sense merely an appearance-a sense perception of any kind, but as used in psychical research and parapsychology the word denotes an abnormal or paranormal appearance or perception, which cannot be explained by any mundane objective cause or purpose. Taken in this sense the word covers all visionary appearances, hallucinations, clairvoyance, and similar unusual perceptions. "Apparition" and "ghost" are frequently used as synonymous terms, though the former is, of course, of much wider significance. A ghost is a visual apparition of a deceased human being-the term implies that the ghost is the spirit of the person it represents. Apparitions of animals and even inanimate objects are also occasionally reported. All apparitions do not take the form of visual images; auditory and tactile false perceptions, although less common, are not unknown. For example, there is record of a house that was "haunted" with the perpetual odor of violets.

Methods and equipment: Still photography and video: using digital, night vision, infrared, and even disposable cameras. EMF meter: to detect possibly unexplained fluctuations in electromagnetic fields. Tablet PC: to record data, audio, video and even environmental fluctuations such as electromagnetic fields. Ambient temperature measurement: using thermographic cameras, thermal imaging cameras, infrared thermometers, and other infrared temperature sensors. Air quality monitoring equipment: to assess the levels of gases such as carbon monoxide, which are thought to contribute to reports of paranormal activity. Infrasound monitoring equipment: to assess the level of sound vibrations. Ghost Box: a radio with a frequency scan mode that allows communication with spirits. Conduct Interviews: collecting testimony and accounts about alleged hauntings. Historical research: researching the history behind the site being investigated.
